No School Wednesday In Waukegan As Teachers Strike Continues
(CBS) -- Talks between the Waukegan school district and teachers ended without a deal Tuesday night in an attempt to end the nearly three-week-old strike. The school district says school has been cancelled Wednesday.
"Two hours into negotiations today, the District's attorney, Anthony Ficarelli, said to us, 'Maybe today's not the day to break up the log jam.' This made it clear that their side was not serious about making a deal. We come to the table every day with the intent to stay all night until we have an agreement," said Waukegan Teachers' Council President Kathy Schwarz.
The school district says both sides negotiated for nearly 13 hours on Tuesday before adjourning before 10 p.m.
"The sides exchanged a number of counter proposals during today's session, and also held a series of sidebars related to salary, benefits and contract duration. Although positive dialogue did occur through sidebars, the two sides remain at odds on financial items, including salary increases," the district said.
