One Dead, Two Injured After Robbery Attempt, Police-Involved Shooting

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Chicago police said officers were forced to open fire overnight, when a robbery turned deadly in the Auburn-Gresham neighborhood.

Shortly before midnight, police officers saw two armed men approach two other men walking down an alley near the 7900 block of South Justine Street, police said. The suspects announced a robbery, and when they spotted police, the suspects shot the two men in the alley.

The officers chased the suspects, and when one of the suspects turned around and pointed a dark object at police, the officers shot him in the chest .The other suspect got away.

One of the men shot by the robbers was pronounced dead at the scene. The other was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, in good condition, with a gunshot wound to the leg.

The suspect shot by police was taken to Christ in serious condition.

Police said two weapons were recovered at the scene.

No officers were injured in the shooting.

The independent Police Review Authority was investigating.
