No Bail For Pair Charged With Shooting Off-Duty Police Officer
CHICAGO (STMW) -- Two men were ordered held without bail Sunday in the shooting of an off-duty Chicago police officer as he left a South Side bar last week.
Cook County Judge Maria Kuriakos Ciesil told Jordan Bailey and Abdourahmane Soumare, both 19, that they were a "danger to themselves and society."
"By the grace of God that person didn't perish," Kuriakos Ciesil said, referring to the wounded officer, during a hearing at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse.
Early Friday, the 41-year-old officer and a companion walked out of the President's Lounge, 653 E. 75th St., and got into a 2001 BMW when Bailey and Soumare approached, prosecutors said in court.
Bailey and Soumare intended to rob the officer and his companion, prosecutors said. Their scheme did not go as planned.
Bailey tapped on the window of the BMW with a 9mm handgun, but instead of rolling the window down, the officer floored the car, prosecutors said.
As they sped away, Bailey opened fire, striking the officer once in the chest, prosecutors said.
The officer kept driving until he was able to flag down a squad car. Those officers drove him to the University of Chicago Medical Center.
He was later taken by ambulance to Mount Sinai Hospital, First Deputy Supt. Al Wysinger said last week, describing the wounded officer as awake and alert and "a very, very lucky . . . at this point."
The officer, who has been with the department for eight years, works out of the 3rd District, where he was shot.
After the shooting, Soumare and Bailey fled to a friend's home, where they had earlier plotted to rob people leaving the bar, prosecutors said.
But they were turned away when they asked to come in, prosecutors said. At one point, they stashed the handgun in a nearby vacate home.
Soumare, of the 700 block of East 79th, was charged with multiple felony counts of attempted armed robbery. He also was charged with discharging a firearm, even though he did not shoot the officer.
In addition to multiple attempted armed robbery charges, Bailey, who lives in South Holland, also was charged with attempted first-degree murder.
Prosecutors said the gun used in the crime was recovered from the vacant house and was determined to be the weapon that wounded the officer.
