The Bernstein Brief: Let Maddon Pick His Staff

(CBS) The Cubs like Chris Bosio as their pitching coach, but that can't matter today.

Same goes for new hires Doug Dascenzo and John Mallee, and all of the holdovers from last year's staff already announced for 2015 in a press release earlier this month.  Never mind that, now.

You don't hire Joe Maddon like this to do anything halfway.  It's his dugout, his bullpen, his clubhouse, and nothing short of that.

If he decides to keep any of these guys, fine.  He may want to just get rolling into this year and sort it out on the fly, or he may actually feel that there are some solid assistants in place.  But what matters is that those decisions are entirely his.

No suggestions from management or expressions of preference to keep feelings from being hurt or do any favors.  Ask Maddon what resources -- human and otherwise -- he needs to do the best job he possibly can from the moment the deal is signed, and get them.

In other words, don't be the Bears.
