Man Shot, Killed By Police At Highland Park Hospital

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 27-year-old man was shot and killed by police early Monday at Highland Park Hospital, after he became combative and pointed a gun at the medical staff.

Highland Park police said the man was reported to be aggressive while inside the hospital, near the emergency room, early Monday morning, and when officers showed up, the man pulled out a handgun.

Officers ordered the man to drop the weapon, and when he would not, an officer shot and killed him. The gunman has been identified as Christopher Anderson of Waukegan.

The man and his 9-year-old daughter had been taken to the hospital late Sunday night, because they were passengers in a car involved in a crash on the Edens Expressway. The driver was arrested on drunk driving charges, and the 27-year-old man and his daughter were taken to the hospital.

A couple hours later, police were called to the hospital, because the 27-year-old allegedly was causing a disturbance and acting belligerent. He allegedly brandished a handgun when police arrived, and ignored repeated commands to drop the gun. That's when an officer shot him.

Sources said his daughter did not see the shooting, but was devastated by her father's death.

The Lake County Major Crimes Task Force was investigating.

The man's family said they don't believe the shooting was not justified, and they have scheduled a news conference for Monday afternoon in Waukegan to make their case.
