Emanuel Wants Feds To Investigate Robocalls Made To Election Judge

(CBS) -- Robocalls made to election judges created confusion with voters waiting in long lines from two in the afternoon, until three in the morning to cast their vote.

CBS 2's Suzanne Le Mignot reports Mayor Rahm Emanuel says this was all unacceptable and he wants answers.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel says when he first heard about robocalls being made to election judges, he called the Corporation Council, telling them to call the state's attorney's office and federal officials.

"Somebody obtained a list with phone numbers. Very specific," Emanuel said.

Those phone numbers, belonged to election judges. They received robocalls, telling them they had to do training to work on Election Day. The claim in the call was false.

"Somebody called with the intent to create confusion, not to have a smooth running process," Emanuel said. "Who did it? How did they get the list? Who paid for it? We have to get to the bottom of it."

Mayor Emanuel supports a special hearing of the rules and ethics committee to look into those robocalls. Emanuel is also incensed Chicagoans were waiting until the wee hours of the morning, like here at Welles Park, to vote.

"People are trying to vote. They shouldn't have to wait until three in the morning. That is unacceptable," Emanuel said. "The Board of Election has some homework and they need to be held accountable and then tell us what more needs to be done. Everybody. And we have to do it."

Mayor Emanuel says that homework for the Board of Elections should involve an after action report, that will provide recommendations, to make sure delays don't happen in the next election process.
