Family Of Murdered Restaurant Employee Searching For Tips On Killer

(CBS) --The family of a Chinese immigrant who was shot to death on Halloween at the restaurant where he worked on Chicago's west side, have been leafleting the neighborhood a day after his funeral in the hopes that someone will come forward with information.

The victim was 41-year-old Changzhi Qiu. He was murdered at about 7 p.m. on Halloween. Qiu was behind the counter at the See Thru Chinese kitchen, on the 5200 block of West Madison.

Police say a man walked in with a gun and demanded money and shot the man.
Rong Qiu, the victim's daughter, says she was told that her father was walking away from the gunman and was shot in the back. She said he was still clutching the money.

"It was a shock to my family. It was a total shock, very unexpected and we're very sad and sometimes crying and cannot even express out sadness."

The soft-spoken daughter said the family wanted to do what they could to help solve the crime.

"We really want to find out the murderer, not just for my Dad but also for protecting other people. We've got to figure out who that is."

George McDade, of Cook County Crime Stoppers, was helping the family leaflet the neighborhood.

"They just put him to rest yesterday and then they're here today and they wanted to be here today. They're so afraid that this person who did this crime will hurt and kill somebody else that they're here in their sorrow and everything to turn around and make the neighborhood safer for everybody else."

McDade said someone knows something. "And it's time for that person, whoever knows any little piece to step forward."

Crime Stoppers is offering a $1,000 reward.

McDade says people calling the tip line, 1-800-535-STOP, don't need to give a name.

He says they just need tips to pass along to police.
