Levine: Super-Agent Boras Thinks Cubs Will Be A Force

PHOENIX (CBS) -- Superstar agent Scott Boras is all in the Cubs' recent aggressive "Go for it" style.

Boras spoke to reporters at the general manager meetings in Phoenix. He gave his own scouting report on the Cubs' future.

"This is the Chicago Cubs, one of the storied franchises in the game," Boras said. "They have built a tremendous base of talent. Many of them will be starting players, two-way players, offensive players. Their ability to concentrate on what they need in free agency should be an open door."

Boras represents Cubs rising star and third baseman Kris Bryant, the team's first pick in the 2013 amateur draft. Bryant has been on a meteoric rise toward the major leagues since signing. Initially, it appears that he will be held back from his first major league experience due to a reluctance to start his free agent clock a year too early. A mid-May promotion is likely at this point.

"It is up to the Cubs if they want him (Bryant) to help them win for six months or four and a half months," Boras said.

The money for the Cubs' young stars, current free agents and others coming as free agents is already waiting for them at Clark and Addison.

"They will be able to fill multiple holes," Boras said. "They have the revenue streams. You have to remember the Cubs were purchased for ($865 million), and I don't think you could touch them for less than $2 billion. That is a reason to invest in your resources. If any fan base deserves it now and not tomorrow, I would say it is the Chicago Cubs."

I asked Boras if he felt Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein had his foot on the pedal for spending on star players now.

"Theo had his foot on the (pedal), and he showed up at an RV park (in signing manager Joe Maddon )," Boras joked. "Yeah, they are making moves that will make the team competitive now. They will now have a wealth of resources to allow them to readily pursue playoff and championship play."
