Schaumburg Police Take Another Crack At Teen's Unsolved Murder
(STMW) -- Twenty years ago this month, a suburban teen was shot to death outside a Schaumburg dance club. Now, investigators are taking another look at the case, and asking the public's help to solve it.
Kevin Toma, of Glendale Heights, was killed about 1 a.m. Nov. 5, 1994, while he was standing outside the rear exit of TOTO's teen dance club at 1450 E. Algonquin, Schaumburg police said.
He was talking to friends when three gunshots came from a fence line to the north of the club, police said. He was shot twice and later died at Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village.
The investigation revealed the shooter was with two other men, and that they may have had a confrontation with a TOTO's employee before the shooting, police said.
Toma, a math honors student, was described by friends and teachers as a bright, friendly person who was looking forward to the wrestling season at Glenbard North High School, the Sun-Times reported following his death.
At the time, the suspected shooter was described as an 18 to 19-year-old Hispanic man, about 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-10 and 150 pounds with a dark complexion, police said.
He had a thin mustache, possibly worn in a "Fu Manchu" style, and was wearing a green, blue and white plaid flannel shirt with a light colored, long-sleeved thermal undershirt underneath.
He was with two other Hispanic men in their late teens, possibly in a "very clean" silver or platinum 4-door Cadillac, police said. The car is believed to be a 1986 to 1988 model year with a dark or blue canvas-style mock convertible top, "5-Star" style wheels with five spokes and white wall tires.
"The Schaumburg Police Department firmly believes that somebody has information or knowledge about this murder," the department said in a statement.
Two detectives who have never before worked on the case are going back over all reports, statements and evidence in the hopes of turning up new leads, police said.
Schaumburg police on Thursday also released sketches of the three suspects, and an image of a car similar to the Cadillac tied to the crime.
