CTA Bus Catches Fire On Lake Shore Drive

Updated 11/18/14 - 10:11 a.m.

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A CTA bus caught fire on southbound Lake Shore Drive, halting traffic during the morning rush.

A CTA spokesperson said a #147/Outer Drive Express bus got a flat tire around 5:45 a.m. near Division Street. The bus pulled over, and soon after, passengers reported smoke in the back of the bus.

The bus driver evacuated all passengers, and called the Fire Department, after spotting flames on the back of the bus.

Firefighters quickly put out the fire, but the entire back half of the articulated bus was gutted by the fire.

All southbound lanes of Lake Shore Drive were closed at Division until about 9 a.m., when all lanes were reopened.

No injuries were reported.

The Fire Department also requested a salt truck for Lake Shore Drive, to melt any ice on Lake Shore Drive from the water used to extinguish the fire.
