Map Shows How Close Plane Was To Making Landing At Midway

By John Dodge

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Shortly after takeoff on Tuesday morning, the pilot of a single engine plane told the control tower at Midway that he needed to return to make an emergency landing.

The image above, courtesy of Google Maps, shows how close the plane was to making the runway.

The plane crashed in the 6500 block of Knox, just a few blocks southeast of the airport.

It is believed that only the pilot was on board.

Based on the location of the crash, it appeared the pilot was on course to the runway just a quarter mile away.

FAA investigators said the pilot was planning to fly to Ohio State University in Columbus but reported engine trouble.
