The Most-Stolen Cars In Illinois, United States

By John Dodge

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The minivan is a hot car in Illinois.

Hot, as in stolen, that is.

The Dodge Caravan--that's right, the Caravan--is the most-stolen vehicle in Illinois--and Wisconsin.

Nationally, the Caravan ranks No. 7 overall with a reported 10,911 thefts in 2013, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, which is based in north suburban Des Plaines.

The most-stolen car in the United States is the Honda Accord: nearly 54,000 were swiped last year. That's a decline from 2012.

If you drive a full-size Chevy pickup just about any place else in the Midwest, consider yourself a marked driver.

Why are these cars so popular? Parts.

The most popular models among thieves are typically from the mid to late 1990s.

Toyota Camrys from 1991 and 1990 are also popular, as Toyota owners keep those cars forever, making the market for those parts attractive.

The Top 10 in 2013:

Honda Accord 53,995 thefts
Honda Civic 45,001 thefts
Chevy Pickup 27,809 thefts
Ford Pickup 26,494 thefts
Toyota Camry 14,420 thefts
Dodge Caravan 10,911 thefts
Jeep Cherokee 9,272 thefts
Toyota Corolla 9,010 thefts
Nissan Altima 8,892 thefts

"The drop in thefts is good news for all of us," said NICB President and CEO Joe Wehrle. "But it still amounts to a vehicle being stolen every 45 seconds and losses of over $4 billion a year.

"That's why we applaud the vehicle manufacturers for their efforts to improve anti-theft technology and pledge to continue to work with our insurance company members and law enforcement to identify and seek vigorous prosecution of the organized criminal rings responsible for so many of these thefts."
