Report: White Sox Expressing Interest In Melky Cabrera

(CBS) The White Sox have expressed interest in free agent outfielder Melky Cabrera, CBSSports.com MLB insider Jon Heyman reported Thursday morning.

Such a move has been speculated previously, as Chicago is in need of a left-handed hitter and a player who can get on base more consistently in front of slugger Jose Abreu. The White Sox posted just a .279 on-base percentage in the No. 2 spot in the order last season.

Cabrera batted .301 with 16 homers and 73 RBIs and a .351 on-base percentage for the Blue Jays last season. He rejected Toronto's $15.3-million qualifying offer recently, so he does have draft pick compensation attached to him.

The Mariners and Orioles also make sense for Cabrera and could be serious suitors, Heyman reported, and the Blue Jays may be trying to retain him as well.

Cabrera will be seeking a four- or five-year deal for $13 million to $15 million a year, according to industry sources, 670 The Score's Bruce Levine has previously reported.
