CIA Torture Report: Five Most Damning Conclusions

By John Dodge

CHICAGO (CBS) -- While it would be a good idea for the citizenry to spend some time reading about the CIA's atrocities in its inhumane treatment of alleged terror suspects, here are the five most damning points contained in the Senate Intelligence Committee report, release on Tuesday.

> 1) "Enhanced interrogation techniques" were not effective in acquiring intelligence or gaining cooperation from detainees.

> 2) The interrogation of CIA detainees was brutal and far worse than the CIA represented to policy-makers and others.

> 3) The conditions of confinement for CIA detainees were harsher than the CIA represented to policy-makers and others.

> 4) The CIA has actively avoided or impeded congressional oversight of the program.

> 5) The CIA impeded effective White House oversight and decision-making.

To review, the program was obscenely brutal (if you have never heard of "rectal feeding," you will learn about it in the report) and simply didn't work.

Equally appalling, the CIA acted with impunity and with complete disregard for its responsibility to the American government and the people.

All of this leads to the question: What is contained in the thousands of other pages of documents that weren't released?

The next time one wonders why people are so angry about government, here is the evidence: Read the unclassified report.
