Hospital Cafeteria Worker Donates Hundreds Of Toys To Sick Kids

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A woman who works in the cafeteria of a Southeast Side hospital visited her company's children's hospital Monday morning and brought with her hundreds of toys.

It's the seventh year in a row that Jessie Tendayi has done it.

She brought with her about 500 toys for boys and girls of all ages at Advocate Children's Hospital. She'll do the same thing at Lutheran General Hospital. She says she doesn't have any children of her own but that "God has called me to be the mother of so many children".

Tendayi is from Zimbabwe. She saves her money every year with a credit union account so that she can buy toys for hospitalized children. She figures she has spent more than $4,000 this year.

To suggest that she's giving so much from so little, Tendayi responds, "To me...my paycheck is big...because it's making a change for the children."

Tendayi says she has started a non-profit "Love for Children" to help her in future years. It does not yet have a website.

Tendayi says she's trying to bring smiles to the children and let them forget their health issues for a little while.
