Two Men Get 95 Years Each For 2012 Murder
CHICAGO (STMW) -- Two south suburban men have each been sentenced to 95 years in prison in connection with the murder of a 20-year-old man mistakenly thought to be involved in an earlier fight with one of the men.
Jabriel Anderson, 21, of Park Forest and Corey Anderson, 24, of Richton Park were both convicted in June of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted first-degree murder in the death of 20-year-old Adam Martinez, according to a statement from the Cook County state's attorney's office.
A third man, 23-year-old Jason Burns shot Martinez on May 12, 2010 in a parking lot in the 100 block of Hemlock Street in Park Forest because he thought that Martinez had been in a fight with Jabriel Anderson, according to prosecutors.
Anderson had a fight with another person, then called Corey Anderson and Jason Burns to come to Park Forest to help him, prosecutors said. Corey Anderson brought a gun and gave it to Burns, who walked up to the car where Martinez was sitting and fired inside.
Martinez was shot once in the head and died, authorities said.
Prosecutors said Martinez was not involved in the fight and was an innocent victim.
Thursday evening, Cook County Judge Luciano Panici sentenced both men to 95-year sentences at the Cook County courthouse in Markham, according to the statement.
Burns, of Richton Park, is currently serving a 35-year prison sentence.
