Man Shot And Killed On Near West Side

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A man was shot to death early Wednesday on the Near West Side, police said.

He had gotten off work at a nearby Burger King shortly before he died, according to a manager.

The man, 35, was standing on the sidewalk in the 1200 block of South Western about 1:15 a.m. when a dark-colored SUV drove past and someone inside opened fire, striking the man in the abdomen, police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro said.

The victim was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, Alfaro said. The Cook County medical examiner's office could not immediately confirm the death early Wednesday.

Police were investigating near a bus stop shelter at the scene of the shooting, where the shattered remains of one of the glass panels could be seen scattered across the sidewalk.

Employees at the Burger King, 2401 W. Ogden, said the victim was a coworker of theirs who typically worked night shifts and took the bus home. He had worked there for about six months.
