One Dead, Two Hurt In Crash After Police Witness South Chicago Shooting

CHICAGO (STMW) -- One person was killed and another was injured in a crash after police witnessed a shooting Sunday night in the South Chicago neighborhood.

Officers saw someone open fire about 9:45 p.m. in the 8000 block of South Manistee Avenue, police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro said.

Police were conducting surveillance on a home when a four-door red Hyundai Sonata pulled up and a male passenger got out, according to a police source.

The person looked through the home's window, walked back to the car and grabbed something.

He then walked to the porch and shot into the home, striking a man inside, according to the source.

The 24-year-old man was shot in the left thigh and was taken to South Shore Hospital, where his condition stabilized, police said.

The passenger got back into the vehicle, which fled the scene, according to the source.

The officers then pursued the vehicle, the source said.

During the chase, the suspect threw a revolver out the car window, according to the source. The same gun was later recovered at 83rd and Phillips.

The chase ended when the suspect crashed into a vehicle, then into a tree in the 9200 block of South Jeffery Boulevard, police said.

The driver, another male, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The passenger suffered a broken arm and was taken to a hospital, where his condition stabilized.

A female was taken to Trinity Hospital with minor injuries after the suspect's vehicle struck her car, Alfaro said.

Police said the shooting victim from Manistee is a documented gang member and the shooting appears to be gang-related.

The Cook County medical examiner's office confirmed the fatality, but did not release further details early Monday.
