Snow Now Unlikely For Chicago Area

By John Dodge

CHICAGO (CBS) -- That dream of a White Christmas will not be a reality for most people in the Chicago area.

A winter storm that had been headed for Chicago is now tracking more to the east of the city.

A winter storm advisory has been canceled for the Chicago area.

The National Weather Service says heavy, wet snow could being falling around noon but taper off in the evening in locations in far Northwest Indiana and well east of Chicago.

A total of 3 inches is possible in some areas, although the heavier amounts are more likely in Northwest Indiana.

Rain was falling over the area on Wednesday morning, but temperatures are expected to fall during the day.

Holiday travel is expected to be difficult, with higher travel times on the expressways, along with possible delays at the city's two main airports. Rain or snow will fall across much of the eastern half of the country on Wednesday.

"We are monitoring conditions," Chicago Department of Transportation spokeswoman Carson Quinn said. "Our drivers, as well as our full complement of plows and equipment, are ready to be dispatched. We have plenty of salt on hand. We urge the public to give themselves additional time tomorrow wherever they may be travelling."
