Story Of Homeless Woman's Family Reunion Continues To Unfold

(CBS) -- One week ago, CBS 2's Brad Edwards shared the remarkable reunion of a mother and daughter. The next chapter continues to unfold.

Shirley Bennett says the past week has been "hectic." She went from squatting in a shack by Cook County Jail to the oncology unit at Little Company of Mary Hospital and in good hands.

"They are, they're angels, I couldn't ask for anything more from the staff," said her daugher, MaryAnn Ontiveros.

Bennett believed she had cancer and her biopsy results are expected Monday.

Ontiveros saw a CBS 2 story on her mother and reunited with her the next day.

CBS 2 learned in October, Chicago police showed up and tried to remove the family. Shirley was arrested along with son Timothy and son Jimmy, who is still behind bars for hitting an arresting officer.

A source tells Edwards Jimmy likely thought he was protecting his mother. Mom waited in the shack by the jail for Jimmy to get out.

Bennett hasn't seen her sisters in over 25 years but has reunited by phone. She says the missed their "love and stuff like that," the most.

She said that she believes things will get better and hopes so, "...being Christmas."
