Source: Bears Fire GM Phil Emery

(CBS) The Bears' house cleaning has begun.

Chicago has fired general manager Phil Emery, 670 The Score's Dan Bernstein confirmed Monday morning. Shortly thereafter, news broke that the Bears also fired coach Marc Trestman.

Emery was steadfast that the goal of the organization was to win multiple championships, which required the team to be in contention on a consistent basis. In three seasons in charge of football operations, Emery fell short of his own standard.

Under Emery's guidance, the Bears never made the playoffs and the team's record declined from 10-6, to 8-8 and most recently 5-11.

At the root of those struggles were Emery's miscalculations in both personnel and coaching hires.

Emery was hired to close the talent gap that existed between the Bears and the Packers and Lions, but his misses in the draft outweighed his hits. Additionally, Emery is responsible for hiring defensive coordinator Mel Tucker and head coach Marc Trestman.
