15 Displaced By Extra-Alarm Fire In Chicago Ridge

CHICAGO (STMW) -- An extra-alarm fire at a southwest suburban apartment complex left about 15 people displaced late Monday in Chicago Ridge.

Crews responded about 10:30 p.m. to the blaze at the 18-unit building in the 9800 block of Sayre Avenue, Chicago Ridge Fire Chief George Sheets told reporters at the scene.

Firefighters were met by heavy flames showing from the back of the second story and spreading to the roof. A second alarm was called for the fire due to the sloppy winter weather and a frozen fire hydrant, Sheets said.

Everyone in the building got out safely and the blaze was under control by 11:30 p.m., officials said.

Six units on the top floor of the building were rendered uninhabitable, and the American Red Cross was assisting about 15 people displaced by the fire, officials said.

The cause of the fire was unknown Monday night.
