Heating Problems Have Students Bundling Up In South Side School

(CBS) -- This bitter blast has students at one Far South Side school wearing coats, hats and gloves in the classroom.

CBS 2's Roseanne Tellez reports at W.E.B. DuBois some parents would sure like to know what's up with the heat. They're livid after their kids told them it was so cold in school today, they were freezing.

10-year-old Kendra Taylor told CBS 2 she bundled up, not for the walk to school but for the classroom after she was told the furnace broke.

"It's freezing when try to do my work my hands always get numb," Taylor said.

"Why would you put child in school for 6 hours with a coat and hat on all day and expect them to function," said Momma Hawk.

Taylor's grandmother says she's complained about the cold temperatures at DuBois School to CPS headquarters and the mayor's office but got no response.

"Everybody in school including staff walking around with hats, snow pants, glove scarves," Hawk said.

Not all parents and kids we talked to outside the school today said they were cold, but most acknowledged some classrooms are without heat.

"It's cold, they have to have on gloves and hats…somebody needs to do someting about it," said parent Linda Redmond.

"This would not happen on the North Side of Chicago and you know it," said another parent.

CPS responded in a statement saying, "This morning, CPS officials quickly addressed a brief heating issue at DuBois Elementary School. The system was repaired earlier today and temperatures were restored to provide a safe and comfortable learning environment in every classroom."
