Cold Day Activities in Chicago with Kids

CHICAGO (CBS) — With many Chicago area schools closed today due to frigid temperatures, parents and caregivers may find themselves searching for safe and fun activities for their kids. Here are a few local options that offer children and grownups a break from the cold.

Goldfish Swim School, multiple locations

Pretend you're in balmy temps with a visit to Goldfish Swim School. Family Swim is open today to the public.

Flirty Cupcakes4631 N. Lincoln

Nothing like a little sugar rush to help forget the cold. Kids are welcome to drop by before 6:00 PM to decorate a cupcake for only $5.

Jewish Community Centers of Chicagomultiple locations

At JCC Chicago, kids enjoy sports, games and even swimming from 9:00-3:00 PM. Cost is $45 per child.

Little Beans Café, 1809 W. Webster

A much-loved playspace for Chicago families, Little Beans Café offers a reprieve from freezing temps and a chance for kids and grownups to socialize.

Marcus Theaters, multiple locations

To help combat the cold, Marcus Theaters is offering free hot chocolate to cinema-goers today at their five Chicagoland locations.

The Neighborhood Boys and Girls Club2501 W. Irving Park

For $50 (and a lunch from home), kids in kindergarten through 9th grade can enjoy a day of sports, arts and crafts and access to the Club's game room.

Purple Monkey Playroom, 2040 N. Western

One of Chicago's coolest playspaces, Purple Monkey welcomes the community on this cold winter day with a safe, nurturing space for kids and free coffee, tea and WiFi for the grownups.

Shedd Aquarium1200 S. Lake Shore Drive

Illinoisans receive free general admission at Shedd today, with access to the aquarium's original galleries, including Caribbean Reef, Amazing Rising and the Waters of the World.

The Wishcraft Workshop, 3907 N. Damon

Cold days are fun days over at Wishcraft Workshop, where children create art and apparel in a delightful community space. Drop-In Crafternoons are offered from 3-6 PM for grades K-5.
