New Clothing Technology Makes It Easier To Stay Warm

(CBS) -- When it comes to dressing for the cold, we've come a long way from long johns and turtle necks.

New technology makes it easier than ever to stay warm. CBS 2's Roseanne Tellez found out at a local active-wear store, it's all about that base.

John Moloznik at Fleet Feet in Old Town says think synthetics or Merino wool for the base layer. It's all in the stitching.

"Against the skin it's actually very porous so that it's actually going to draw moisture away from you," Moloznik said.

For a mid-layer, something soft inside.

"It has a synthetic outer material and they brush fleece interior,"

He says the top layer is about element resistance.

"So it's a shield that becomes a barrier and protects you from the elements."

Then throw in a scarf, headband and mittens, not gloves.

"When you keep your hands together, that's how you stay the warmest," he said.

The people at Fleet Fleet will tell you there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothes.

Synthetics are going to be less expensive than wool, but it's the way it's stitched that makes it effective and durable. If you're willing to spend a little more on anything, make it the base.
