How John Fox's Record Compares With NFL Veteran Coaches

By John Dodge

CHICAGO (CBS) -- John Fox is the Chicago Bears most-wanted man, if you believe all of the media reports.

The team confirmed that Fox, with 13 years of NFL head coaching experience, interviewed for the head coaching job on Wednesday. (Fox's Wikipedia page already listed him as the Bears head coach! Click on image to enlarge.)

If Fox takes the job, it will be a far different hire for the Bears historically.

Since George Halas retired from coaching in 1967, the Bears have never hired a man with previous NFL coaching experience.

Fox has a 119-89 career record (.572 winning percentage), with two trips to the Super Bowl.

How does Fox's record compare with other recent veteran NFL coaches?

Pretty good, when you consider anybody with more than five years of NFL coaching experience must be fairly good at the job.

If you take that outlier Belichick out of the list, Fox compares quite nicely with the other coaches, but is just missing a Super Bowl title. He got close against New England, losing on a last-second field goal, but was blown out last year against Seattle.

Here is a look at the records of coaches with more than five years of experience and were active head coaches through the 2014 season.

Bill Belichick 211-109 .659 (3 Super Bowl, 2 AFC Championships)
Mike McCarthy 94-49 .656 (1 Super Bowl Championship)
John Harbaugh 72-40 .643 (1 Super Bowl Championship)
Mike Tomlin 82-46 .641 (1 Super Bowl Championship, 1 AFC Championship)
Sean Payton 80-48 .625 (1 Super Bowl Championship)
Mike Smith 66-46 .589 (No Championships)
Andy Reid 150-105 .588 (1 NFC Championship)
Pete Carroll 84-61 .579 (1 Super Bowl Championship)
John Fox 119-89 .572 (1 NFC, 1 AFC Championship)
Tom Coughlin 164-140 .539 (2 Super Bowl Championships)
Jeff Fisher 162-147 .524 (1 AFC Championship)
Marvin Lewis 100-89 .529 (No Championships)
Lovie Smith 83-77 .519 (1 NFC Championship)
Rex Ryan 46-50 .479 (No Championships)
Ken Whisenhunt 47-65 .420 (1 NFC Championship)
