Fioretti Accuses Emanuel Of Refusing To Press Charges In Mugging Of Mayor's Son

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Chicago alderman and mayoral candidate Bob Fioretti today raised the mugging of Mayor Rahm Emanuel's son as a campaign issue, reports WBBM Political Editor Craig Dellimore.

Alderman Fioretti was trying to make the point that Mayor Emanuel isn't consistent when it comes to crime issues.

After a City Club speech, he suggested that Emanuel refused to press charges against suspects picked up in the mugging of the mayor's 17-year-old son near the family's Ravenswood home and the theft of his mobile phone.

"When your kid gets a tooth almost knocked out, when your kid is out…whatever he was doing at 10 o'clock at night on the phone and had to leave the house, what message does that send to every community about 'let's not snitch?'" Fioretti said.

Emanuel campaign spokesman Steve Mayberry said, "It is sad that Bob Fioretti's campaign has come to this and it doesn't warrant a response."

Reports indicate police did find two people in possession of the phone but did not charge them with being the actual muggers.

Fioretti did not offer any proof, just an allegation. Police say no charges have been filed because no arrest has been made.
