Freezing Rain Advisory In Effect Until Early Tuesday

(STMW) -- Drivers in the Chicago area could wake up to icy roadways Tuesday morning as light snow begins to turn into freezing rain Monday night.

A freezing rain advisory is in effect for all Chicago-area counties in Illinois counties until 6 a.m., the National Weather Service office in Romeoville said.

Less than a tenth of an inch of ice will accumulate overnight, but that's still enough to leave untreated roads and walkways slippery, the weather service said. Drivers should slow down and take extra precautions, as travel may be difficult.

As flakes began to fall Monday afternoon, the Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation deployed its full fleet of 280 plows to make sure arterial streets are clear ahead of the afternoon rush, the department said in a statement.

About 190 fights are canceled Monday at O'Hare and Midway airports, though largely because of what is predicted to be historically bad weather for the East Coast.

As of 3:30 p.m., flights were not experiencing any delays, but airlines had canceled more than 160 flights at O'Hare, according to the city Department of Aviation. Some flights at Midway were experiencing delays of up to 25 minutes, and about 30 flights had been canceled.

The blizzard, expected for several states on the East Coast, is expected to drop anywhere from 18-24 inches of snow between Monday and Wednesday, the National Weather Service said.
