Circumstances Behind College Student's Fall In Rome Remain Mystery

(CBS) -- A student from Glen Ellyn is facing the fight of his life in an Italian hospital.

20-year-old Andrew Mogni suffered a devastating fall and has been in a coma ever since. In this Original Report, Roseanne Tellez talks to his family about the mystery in Rome that put him in this condition.

Andrew Mogni was excited to begin a semester of study in Rome, but just six hours into his visit, the University of Iowa student fell 40 feet from a wall along the banks of the Tiber River.

His parents and two older brothers rushed to the Italian hospital where Andrew's been in a medically induced coma for two weeks now.

"We do not know how much damage has occurred at this point. We're hoping none has happened and we're really praying hard that Andrew comes of out of this," said Ben Mogni, Andrew's brother.

Because Andrew was alone, no one knows what happened, only that his wallet, cellphone and gold chain were missing. Police in Rome are investigating

"It's been a very difficult time for all of us," Ben Mogni said.

At the Chicago Muscular Dystrophy Association where Mogni is a beloved summer camp volunteer, they're optimistic.

"He's physically strong, emotionally strong," said Megan Burns. "We know that he can make through this."

"If everyone could please keep up prayers and good thoughts I know Andrew is absolutely loving all the positive energy he's receiving over there," Ben Mogni said.

His family is thankful for the outpouring of support and hope to bring Andrew home just as soon as he is medically stable.
