2 Dead, 5 Wounded In Weekend Shootings

CHICAGO (STMW) -- Two people were killed and at least five others were wounded in shootings throughout the city since Friday afternoon.

The most recent fatal shooting happened Saturday morning in the South Chicago neighborhood.

Officers responding to a shots fired complaint about 11:15 a.m. in the 8100 block of South Chappel found a man unresponsive in an alley with multiple gunshot wounds, police said.

Savoy Young, 22, of the 8200 block of South Luella was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Friday evening, a 34-year-old man was shot and killed in the West Englewood neighborhood.

Leanrew Harper was found outside with multiple gunshot wounds about 5:40 p.m. in the 7000 block of South Honore, according to police and the medical examiner's office.

Harper, who lived on the block where he was shot, was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

Police said he had documented gang ties.

The most recent nonfatal shooting left a pastor seriously injured Sunday afternoon when someone opened fire inside a church in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the South Side.

About 3:30 p.m., the 40-year-old man was inside a church in the 1700 block of West 48th Street when someone outside fired shots into the building, police said.

A police report said the shooter opened fire on a crowd of people who were congregating inside the small church.

The man was shot in the upper right arm and was taken in serious condition to Stroger Hospital, said Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford. No one else was injured.

Police sources said the pastor may not have been the intended target of the shooting.

Earlier Sunday, a man was shot at a gas station in the Little Village neighborhood on the Southwest Side.

The 28-year-old man was at a gas station in the 3400 block of South California about 1:10 a.m. when a white SUV pulled up and someone inside fired shots, police said. The man was shot in the left thigh and was driven to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.

About 11:50 p.m. Saturday, a man was shot in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood on the Southwest Side.

The 22-year-old was walking in the 6000 block of South Maplewood when someone walked up and fired shots, police said. He was shot in the leg and told police he walked to Mount Sinai Hospital, which is more than six miles away from where the shooting occurred. He is listed in good condition. A police source said the man is a documented gang member.

At 10:05 p.m. Saturday, a man was shot during a robbery in the West Side Austin neighborhood.

The 30-year-old was sitting in the driver's seat of a vehicle about in the 700 block of North Central when someone approached on foot and announced a robbery, police said. The man was shot in the upper right arm and was taken in good condition to Mount Sinai Hospital.

Friday night, a 40-year-old man was critically wounded in a drive-by shooting in the South Side Englewood neighborhood.

The man was in a car with another person about 6:30 p.m. in the 5700 block of South Wells when a white vehicle pulled alongside and someone opened fire, striking the man in the back of the head and right wrist, police said.

The other person in the car drove the man to Saint Bernard Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition, police said.
