Lawndale Residents Say City Not Plowing Streets Fast Enough

CHICAGO (CBS) -- It's been three days now since the big blizzard dumped more than a foot of snow on Chicago.

A viewer email from Nick in Lawndale says, "City trucks have not been in this area not even once and today is Wednesday." CBS 2's Suzanne Le Mignot went to check it out.

An SUV, stuck in the snow, got a push near 19th and Sawyer so the driver can finally be on her way. Those living in Lawndale say it is a familiar scene.

Lawndale resident DeAngelo Austin says none of the streets have been plowed.

"Cars have been getting stuck, my girlfriend's car has been getting stuck. They all stuck, all on 19th, all on Troy, Trumbull. We're just waiting on them to come."

Those calling Lawndale home say the side streets haven't been plowed since Sunday's blizzard. Austin says people have been calling the Alderman's office.

"My girlfriend just called 311 and they haven't been picking up," Austin said. "I told her just, keep calling, keep calling, keep calling."

24th Ward Ald. Michael Chandler says in a statement, "The main streets were taken care of first. Monday, we started on the side streets. Half have been completed. It's still being worked on."

About an hour after CBS 2 arrived in Lawndale, we saw a snowplow on some of the side streets. A main street, in the community, Kedzie, was already plowed.

Austin says the snow removal can't happen soon enough with more snow on the way.

"It's bad because just yesterday, somebody almost got into an accident on Troy and the whole street was lined up and nobody colic get passed. It's messed up out here."
