Lurie Children's Hospital Collecting Valentines For Sick Kids

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Lurie Children's Hospital is reaching out for help sending Valentine's cards to sick children.

It's the third year that the hospital's "Handfuls of Love" program is collecting cards for children who are hospitalized. Lurie spokeswoman Amanda Salhoot said it's a way of letting them escape their illness for a bit.

"During a time that they're usually at school and collecting Valentines from their classmates. So we're bringing that experience to them," she said.

Salhoot said it's free and easy to send a Valentine to a child at Lurie.

"People can go online and select one of three designs, and then they can type a personalized message. Those cards will be printed on Valentine's Day, and then hand-delivered," she said.

Lurie was hoping to collect at least 10,000 cards. You can pick a card and write a message, by clicking here. You can send cards up until the morning of Valentine's Day, one week from Saturday.
