Medical Pilot Program Uses 'Fitbits' To Monitor Patients

(CBS) – Fitbits are replacing watches and bracelets for many people around the country.

But here in Chicago, CBS 2's Dana Kozlov reports they are not just for exercise anymore.

Life is just a dance now for 66-year-old Greg Ray.

Just 12 months ago, he could barely walk because of nerve trouble.

It required surgery. Part of his treatment involved donning a Fitbit for six months so that the doctors could compare his activity levels from before and after surgery. The levels are monitored via computer.

Northwestern Memorial Hospital is one of several hospitals nationwide participating in this pilot program, but the only one in Chicago. As for Ray, he says he's been feeling good.

"I was hoping that I was going to be able to do something to help other people," he says.

The study currently focuses on recovery for minimally invasive spine surgeries. Doctors hope to broaden their study going forward.
