Man Tried To Grab Boy Walking To School: Chicago Police

(STMW) -- Police are warning parents after someone man tried to kidnap a boy walking to school Thursday in the West Elsdon neighborhood on the Southwest Side.

The boy was walking in the 5700 block of South Keeler about 8:15 a.m. when the man approached him and tried to grab him, Area Central detectives said in a community alert. The student broke free and ran home.

Authorities describe the suspect as a white man between 55 and 60 years old, about 5-foot-7 to 5-foot-8 and 165 to 175 pounds, police said. He has longer gray hair, and was unshaven.

He was wearing a gray stocking hat, a black jacket and black Converse shoes, police said.

Parents should not let children walk or play alone, and should identify safe havens such as businesses or trusted neighbors' homes along their routes to school, the alert said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Area Central detectives at (312) 747-8380.
