Winter Storm Warning For Parts Of Northwest Indiana

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Valparaiso and other parts of northwest Indiana have been getting pounded by lake effect snow on Thursday.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning until 9 p.m. EST for Porter County and LaPorte County

Roads have been tough to negotiate, as wind has blown hard at times, and lake effect snow has been piling up.

Chesterton resident Jim Burns was filling up his tank on Thursday, and said he's had it with all the snow this winter.

"It's nasty. It depends where you live," he said. "Down in Wheatfield, we have an office down there, and the sun's shining, and it's not snowing; and in Newton County, we had a meeting today, and there's sunshine down there; but up here we're just getting the lake effect, you know? It just depends where you live."

On the radar, the lake effect snow shows up as two long tails, wagging east to west and back again, dumping snow along the southeastern tip of Lake Michigan.

The National Weather Service said accumulations in Porter County and LaPorte County will vary greatly, depending on how long the bands of snow last. Accumulations could total 4 to 8 inches, with even higher amounts possible in some areas where heavy activity persists the longest.
