Dan Pompei's Thoughts On Latest Bears Happenings

(CBS) In meeting with the media Wednesday at the NFL Combine, Bears general manager Ryan Pace and coach John Fox made clear that they're still meticulously evaluating their entire roster and want to learn more about their players before deciding the best course of action for Chicago's future.

Between their words, though, there was much to be interpreted. 670 The Score contributor and respected NFL writer Dan Pompei shared his take on what it all meant on Twitter on Thursday. Give him a follow for quality insight.

Here were Pompei's thoughts on the latest Bears happenings.

1. Ryan Pace and John Fox know exactly what and who Jay Cutler is by now, but they are playing it smart by moving deliberately.

2. I'm guessing Cutler stays, but I know that if you aren't sure if you want something pretty quickly, you usually really don't want it.

3. My read on Cutler situation is Pace wants to see if a trade market develops for him and/or if a suitable veteran quarterback option for Bears exists.

4. The Bears can't count on finding a QB who can start in the draft. It's a thin, weak class for QBs.

5. The Bears would have to consider Marcus Mariota if he fell to No. 7 in the draft, but they can't count on that. Moving up for him isn't a good option.

6. Josh McCown as the uncontested starting quarterback for the Bears is not a good option.

7. Josh McCown as a No. 2 quarterback is a fine option.

8. McCown will probably have better offers from other teams, both in terms of money and opportunity.

9. It's clear Pace and Fox want to ensure Brandon Marshall is willing to conform and do it their way before they commit. All about ground rules.

10. If Pace and Fox really wanted Lance Briggs and Charles Tillman back, I think they would have said so.

11. Shea McClellin as an inside linebacker in 3-4 is intriguing. Don't we already know what he can do as a pass rusher from the outside linebacker position?

12. The problem with defensive ends Jared Allen and Willie Young is that Fox has to evaluate them on the field before he knows if they can transition to a 3-4, and he has to make decisions about their positions before he'll see them on field.

13. It might be most logical to get an outside linebacker in the draft, but Allen and Young aside, the Bears need to add impact players in the front seven.

14. I wouldn't be surprised if Kyle Long gets some action at right tackle. The door isn't closed like it had been.
