Mayoral Candidates Making Final Weekend Push Ahead Of Election

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Three of the men who want to be the next mayor of Chicago made a case today for why they should get Chicagoans' votes on this final weekend before Election Day, reports WBBM's Mike Krauser.

Cook County Commissioner Jesus "Chuy" Garcia, Alderman Bob Fioretti and William "Dock" Walls each made a pitch for votes at Rainbow PUSH headquarters on Saturday.

"I am a threat Why? Because they fear me," Garcia said.

"This city is for everybody, not the few, not those who are the banker buddies or the Wall Street buddies of this mayor," Fioretti said.

"Red light cameras, blue light cameras, speed zone cameras, gadgets that take people's money and ruin their lives," said Walls.

Garcia said he is confident.

"We will force a runoff on Tuesday, Feb. 24," he said.

Walls suggested the others should stop wasting their time.

"We are doing extremely well and our exit polling shows us winning handily," Walls.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel and businessman Willie Wilson were not at the Rainbow PUSH forum.

CBS 2's Suzanne Le Mignot reports Emanuel shook hands and sat down to eat a bowl of spicy chili at H-Dogs Coffee and pastries in Bronzeville. He says this election is not about the next four years, but the next generation and continuing to build a world-class city.

Mayor Emanuel was asked about the possibility of being forced into a runoff.

"This is obviously up to the voters," Emanuel said. "I think that they know the stake in this election is about the future of this city and whether we are going to continue to do the things necessary to build a stronger future. In the last four years we have made fundamental changes to a failed set of status quo policies and politics that didn't work for people."

Wilson was planning on campaigning Saturday with West Side Congressman Danny Davis.

Candidates will be back at it Sunday. Several of them darting from one event to the next, as many as 8 events for some on the final weekend day before Tuesday's election.
