The Bernstein Brief: Good Luck Estimating A Rose Recovery Timeline

By Dan Bernstein-
CBSChicago.com senior columnist

(CBS) Comps don't work when Derrick Rose is concerned.

We can list every athletic knee that has ever been scoped -- even finding those that have undergone the same procedures in the same order at the same age, then looking at the various recovery timetables to project reasonable expectations. And it's all pointless, because it's Rose we're talking about.

Today or tomorrow, he'll either have his troublesome meniscus shaved down or repaired, depending on what Dr. Brian Cole sees and advises. Then Rose will retreat to his fortress of solitude -- his protective bubble of family and confidantes -- and begin another rehabilitation.

Good luck after that figuring anything else out. Rose and his close-knit camp don't like communicating and are bad at it when they do, all full of mixed messages, hidden agendas and comments that go from the oblique to the bizarre. That is further complicated (or perhaps caused) by whatever goes on inside Rose's head as he comes to terms with what his body can and can't do.

We're back in the weird wilderness of a Rose recovery, now knowing well there's little we can trust to guide our understanding.
