Pebble Time Beats Apple Watch To Punch ... Again

By John Dodge

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Taking away a bit of the lustre behind the reported launch of the Apple Watch next week, the team at Pebble has launched its latest smart watch on Kickstarter, smashing funding records in the process.

Pebble Time opened its Kickstarter campaign on Feb. 24 and it has already become the most-funded project in Kickstarter history.

Pebble Time and the Pebble Time Steel feature a new color e-paper display and microphone for responding to notifications.

Pebble Time is fully compatible with all 6,500 existing Pebble apps and watchfaces.

Three colors will be available exclusively on Kickstarter. Pebble Time starts shipping in May. Pebble Time Steel starts shipping in July.

Pebble Time's new microphone lets you send voice replies to incoming notifications or take short voice notes.

"We have so much gratitude for our community and the herculean support they've shown us -- from the first Pebble Kickstarter campaign to today," Eric Migicovsky, Pebble CEO, said in a statement. "We're inspired by the backers who believe in us, and our goal is to continue making them happy with amazing smartwatches that simplify our daily life and help us accomplish more. It's been an unbelievable ride, and there are still 24 days left!"
