Man Charged With Robbing, Stabbing Cab Driver

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A North Side man charged with robbing and stabbing a cab driver early Friday in the West Ridge neighborhood has been ordered held on a $500,000 bond.

Melvin M. Atto, 21, faces felony counts of armed robbery and aggravated battery for the attack that happened about 2:30 a.m. in the 6700 block of North California Avenue, Chicago Police said.

He allegedly was armed with a knife when he got into the cab and demanded money from the 32-year-old man at the wheel.

Atto, of the 2500 block of West Winnemac Avenue, made off with an unspecified amount of money and the driver suffered lacerations to the right arm and left leg, police said.

He was taken to Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, where his condition has stabilized.

Atto was arrested Saturday morning in the 5900 block of North Sacramento, police said.

He appeared in bond court Sunday, and was ordered held on a $500,000 bond, according to the Cook County sheriff's office. He is next scheduled to appear in court March 13.
