Garden Expert: Leave That Lawn Alone...For Now

(CBS) -- A garden specialist is warning Chicago area residents, "If you love your lawn, let it be," reports WBBM's John Cody.

Tony Fulmer, chief horticultural officer at the Chalet Nursery in Wilmette, says warm weather inspires inspections by the outdoor deprived but he says leave that lawn alone…for now.

"One of the things that's very easy to do is by walking back and forth over it, especially with our heavy clay soils, you can compact the soil and by that what I mean is by compressing it when it is this wet, you can drive out the air spaces and air is very important for roots and for good healthy plant growth," Fulmer said.

Fulmer says wait until the lawn has dried enough so you're not sinking in or leaving muddy prints behind, before getting up close and personal with the still dormant blades of grass.
