Watch: Ice Skater Glides Along "Smooth As Glass" Lake Michigan

(CBS) -- This is definitely a "Don't try this at home or anywhere else story" but it's a wonderful adventure with an adventurous social studies teacher who recorded herself ice skating over miles of normally off-limits ice, reports WBBM's John Cody.

Remember last week's endless chill? Well it made conditions just right for April Chernoby and a few fellow skaters from the West Michigan Speedskating Club on the world's largest ice skating rink: Lake Michigan.

"Typically it is all broken and shattered from the wave action, but there was a really brief window of just a couple days where the ice was completely smooth, literally smooth as glass, and you could go out there with your skates," she said.

Chernoby skated right alongside Grand Haven's pier.

"Very little opportunity to skate by a pier and a lighthouse and beautiful icebergs," she said.

Chernoby called it a once in a life time chance as Lake Michigan turned smooth as glass just off the shoreline at Grand Haven.
