Hate Groups In Illinois (21), Total Of 784 Across United States

By John Dodge

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The United States of America officially is home to 784 so-called hate groups, ranging from black separatists, white supremacists, neo-Nazis and anti-gay organizations.

Of the groups with a particular focus, neo-Nazi organizations are the most common in the U.S., according to 2014 data compiled by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

In Illinois, the Southern Poverty Law Center, found 21 hate organizations.

In Indiana, there are 16 recognized hate groups. Wisconsin has 10 and Michigan 15.

California leads the nation with 57 such groups.

The SPLC explained its methodology: "Hate group activities can include criminal acts, marches, rallies, speeches, meetings, leafleting or publishing.

"Websites appearing to be merely the work of a single individual, rather than the publication of a group, are not included in this list.

"Listing here does not imply a group advocates or engages in violence or other criminal activity."
