Bears Sign WR Eddie Royal To 3-Year Deal

(CBS) The Bears have signed receiver Eddie Royal to a three-year deal.

The deal was first reported by U-T San Diego Chargers beat reporter Michael Gehlken. Terms of the deal aren't yet known.

A seven-year veteran, the 28-year-old Royal played the last three seasons for the Chargers. He had 62 catches for 778 yards and seven touchdowns in 16 games, including 11 starts, in 2014. Prior to his time in San Diego, Royal played for four seasons in Denver, including 2011, when new Bears coach John Fox was the Broncos' leader. Royal's position coach in 2009 and 2010 was new Bears offensive coordinator Adam Gase.

Royal also has a history with Bears quarterback Jay Cutler from their days in Denver. Royal had 91 catches for 980 yards with Cutler as his quarterback in his rookie year in 2008.

The Bears hosted Royal for a visit Wednesday. He's likely best suited to be a No. 3 receiver, and he'll be called upon to help replace the production of Brandon Marshall, who was officially traded to the Jets on Tuesday.

Royal also has extensive experience as a punt returner.
