Levine: Quintana Would Be A Worthy Opening Day Choice For White Sox

By Bruce Levine-

(CBS) -- Although you can make a great case for White Sox right-hander Jeff Samardzija getting the Opening Day start, lefty Jose Quintana may have a good case for getting the plum assignment himself.

"I don't know what they are going to do," Quintana said Friday. "I will be preparing like I always do and ready for the season. We are all happy with the team we have, and that is what matters."

With Chris Sale scheduled to start the season on the DL, the Opening Day starter will either be Quintana or Samardzija, according to manager Robin Ventura, who added he would be revealing his choice soon.

Quintana had another good outing Friday. He pitched 2 2/3 innings innings of one-hit ball and struck out three Colorado hitters.

Although Samardzija is new to the White Sox, he does have two Opening Day starts on his resume to offer.

The team started Quintana on four days rest Friday to sync him up with Samardzija. This type of five-day schedule would make it possible for a first- or second-game start for either pitcher in Kansas City.

Samardzija has also said it would be an honor to start. He says his focus is on making 33 starts, not just an opening series opportunity.
