Park District Assessing Winter Damage To Lakefront Path
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A week has passed since Chicago was thrust from subzero temperatures into spring, but the Chicago Park District said Thursday that it needs another week of warm weather to complete an assessment of the damage wrought over the winter to its lakefront running and bicycling path.
Despite the delay to the assessment and repairs, hundreds used the path Thursday.
A steady stream of walkers, runners, bicyclists and people pushing baby buggies paraded past the North Avenue beach house, which remains closed until May. A winter's worth of soggy leaves, old newspapers, used water bottles and other debris still lines the path.
The runners and bicyclists said there is little, if any, snow left on the path itself, except maybe in the shadows near Ohio Street, although there continues to be runoff and puddles in some places where snow mounds and ice are next to the path.
One woman remarked that there is salt that can be "tricky" in places. For many, the more pressing issue is getting muscles to work that have been idle since December.
