Carpentersville Man Dead, Wife Hurt In Aurora Semi Crash

(STMW) --A Carpentersville man was killed and his wife was injured when the car he was driving ran a red light and crashed into a semi truck Tuesday afternoon in west suburban Aurora.

Carlos Villegas, 89, was driving a sedan westbound on Diehl Road about 1:20 p.m. when he apparently ran a red light at Eola Road, Aurora police spokesman Dan Ferrelli said. The car hit a semi that was traveling north on Eola with a green light.

Villegas, of Carpentersville, was taken to an Aurora hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said. His 87-year-old wife was riding in the front seat, and is at an Aurora hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The semi went on to hit a third vehicle, a sedan that was stopped on southbound Eola waiting to turn east onto Diehl, Ferrelli said.

The 45-year-old woman in that car refused medical treatment, as did the Aurora man driving the semi, police said.

Everyone involved in the crash was wearing a seatbelt, and there were no indications that drugs or alcohol were factors, police said. No citations were issued.

Both roads have been shut down in all directions since the crash and remain closed as of 6:20 p.m. Ferrelli said.

Illinois State Police are assisting Aurora police in the investigation.
