Blackhawks Sign D Michael Paliotta

(CBS) The Blackhawks didn't let let Michael Paliotta get away.

A 21-year-old defenseman from the University of Vermont who Chicago took in the third round of the 2011 draft, Paliotta has signed with the Blackhawks, the team announced Thursday afternoon. Because of a loophole in the collective bargaining agreement, there was worry in some circles that Chicago could let Paliotta slip away this summer, much like Kevin Hayes did last year. That's not a worry now, as Paliotta inked a two-year deal.

Paliotta had a team-high 36 points in 41 for Vermont last season, recording a +15 plus/minus rating as a senior. He also has experience with the U.S. national team's developmental program. He helped Team USA win a gold medal at the 2011 U18 World Junior Championship.
