Man Charged With Beating Wife To Death

Podcast

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Charges have been upgraded to murder against a 64-year-old man whose wife died three days after a beating in their home in northwest suburban Huntley.

An order of protection had been in place since November, but it failed to save Carol Hartgraves. Deputy Police Chief Mike Klunk says there is evidence indicating that the violence in her marriage to husband Edward pre-dated the order.

The call to the Hartgraves' home at 10505 Longfield Dr. was not the first since the couple had moved from Schaumburg to Huntley in January. Klunk said that on Feb. 22, Carol Hartgraves called police to report that her husband was threatening her in their home. He was charged with domestic battery and violating a protection order issued when the couple lived in Schaumburg. He agreed to plead guilty to a charge of simple battery and was placed on one year supervision.

Klunk said that when Edward Hartgraves called police Friday to their home, he said his wife had cuts to her chin. Klunk says police found she also had a broken arm. At first, she was able to give police limited information, which led to charges of domestic battery and violation of the order. After she died Monday, the charges were upgraded to first-degree murder.

A McHenry County judge set bail at $5 million. He returns to court in Woodstock at 9 a.m. Friday.
