More Snow Friday Morning, But Spring Weather Returns Next Week

Updated 03/27/15 - 9:15 a.m.

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Spring just keeps hitting the snooze button on us.

Sure, we got that one glorious day of temperatures in the 70s a couple weeks back, after three straight days of 60 or better over the St. Patrick's Day Weekend, but since then it's been no better than 50 degrees in Chicago. We've only seen that temperature twice since then.

This whole week has basically been an ugly flashback to winter. It started with nearly 6 inches of snow on Monday, and while temperatures haven't exactly been frigid, they've been well below normal all week; only 31 on Monday, or 19 degrees below normal for this time of year, with our best conditions this week still 8 degrees colder than usual.

Add to that another spate of snow Friday morning, which certainly caught plenty of drivers off-guard, with lots of fender benders during the morning rush, as the snow fell thick and heavy at times.

As of 6:30 a.m., about half an inch had been recorded at both of Chicago's airports. Even more snow had fallen in the western suburbs, with observers measuring 1.7 inches in Oak Park, 1.8 inches in Lisle, and 2.1 inches in Downers Grove.

While some relief is on the way, Chicago will have to endure a couple more days of wintry conditions.

Friday's temperature is expected to be only about 30 degrees, with lake effect snow on and off for much of the day in Cook and Will counties in Illinois, and Lake County in Indiana. The snow could add up to nearly an inch by the end of the day.

Saturday's temperatures will only be slightly better, topping out around 34.

Sunday is when a more significant change will come our way, as temperatures jump to the high 40s, and will gradually climb to the low 60s by Wednesday.
